Q: Where do you get your ideas?

A: I get my ideas from a number of different places. I might see something or be having a conversation with someone that inspires me, but mostly they come to me as daydreams. In cases such as my Once I series, the idea started with a character. I wanted to write a character who was shy and awkward and maintained that character trait throughout, and so I asked myself what situation they might find themselves in and let the story develop from there.

Q: Why did you start writing?

A: I started writing because I had an idea and I just felt like I needed to put it down. Once I started though, I discovered that I love writing and telling stories. I figure, when doing something makes you happy there’s no reason not to pursue it professionally.

Q: If you had once piece of advice for aspiring authors, what would it be?

A: My one piece of advice would be not to stress too much about being the best or being like a ‘famous’ author. Every writer is different, we all have different ways of writing and different ways of working. One of the hardest lessons in my years as a writer was learning to tune out all the noise from everyone else telling me how to write ‘properly’. It actually made me quite depressed and almost robbed me of this thing I love, it was only when I finally got angry and decided to just write the stories I wanted, the way I wanted, that I was able to move past that and write the stories you’ve read.
